About Stockton On Tees - show infohide info
Stockton-on-Tees is a town of 186,000 inhabitants, on the banks of the River Tees. It is considered to be in County Durham, though the town south of the Tees is technically in North Yorkshire. The town began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement. The manor of Stockton was created arounf 1136, and since then a number of changes have taken place. Stockton's market can trace its history back to 1310, when Bishop Bek of Durham granted a market charter. The town is also famed for being a part of the worlds first steam railway: The Stockton and Darlington Railway. Stockton has the worlds oldest railway station building. The major industries in Stockton include ship-repairing, steel and chemicals. Recently, Stockton town centre has undergone many developments including the spectacular, albeit wobbly, Millennium Bridge, the Queens Campus of Durham University, several acres of office buildings erected along the South bank of the River Tees within the Teesdale development and Wellington Square a modern shopping arcade erected upon the old Wellington Street area of the town centre. Despite its proud railway history, the town only sees a few local services between Middlesbrough and Newcastle/Gateshead/Hexham and Carlisle. At Newcastle, connections to the East Coast Main Line can be made for services to London and Scotland. Nearby towns include Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Redcar, Billingham, Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Durham, Spennymoor, Yarm, Sedgefield and Thornaby-on-Tees.
