About Uttoxeter - show infohide info

Uttoxeter is a market town in the county of Staffordshire. The town has a population of approixmately 12,000 inhabitants. The towns beginnings can be traced to the Saxon times, and it was mentioned in the Domesday book, although at the time its name was 'Wotocheschede'; the name has corrupted itself into Uttoxeter over the years. The town was granted its market charter in 1252. The town is known for being the last surrender (of the Royalists to the Parliamentarians) during the English Civil War in 1646. The town is also known for the father of Samuel Johnson selling books on the towns market, and Samuel famously refused to work on the stall. when he was older, he stood out on the street in the rain without a hat as penance. This event is commemerated in the Johnson Memorial, which stands in Market Place, in the centre of Uttoxeter. There is also a Johnson Road in the town, named after him. Today the main sources of employment in the town are the JCB factory and head office. Also nearby is a Fox's biscuit factory, and Alton Towers. The town was once connected to the Caldon Canal via a branch to Uttoxeter, though of this only a wharf in Uttoxeter remains, as the canal was filled in and used as a foundation for the now closed 'North Staffordshire Railway' between Macclesfield and Uttoxeter. The town is also subject of a famous comedy sketch by the comedians Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, in which they play obnoxious businessmen discussing plans for a huge sports complex in the town, the comedy deriving from the fact that Uttoxeter is actually a very quiet and sedate town. The town has a railway station, which sees services betwen Derby and Crewe, from where connections can be made to the Midland Main Line (at Derby) or the West Coast Main Line (at Crewe). The town is bypassed by the A50 road, between Stoke-on-Trent and the M1 near to East Midlands Airport. Nearby towns to Uttoxeter include Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Derby, Burton-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Cannock.
