About St Helens - show infohide info

St Helens is a town in the north west of England, in the county of Merseyside. St Helens has a population of 102,629. St Helens was formed in the late 19th century by the merging of townships of Eccleston, Windle, Parr and Sutton, hence, it was named after St. Helen's Parish Church in Hardshaw within Windle, though today the apostrophe is dropped. The glass industry was formed in St Helens, owing to the nearby availability of sand and coal. The St Helens Canal was built in 1757 to transport raw materials and finished products to and from the River Mersey. A lot of former industrial land has been redeveloped and is now used for shopping centres, hotels and housing. The majority of the coal mines nearby the town all closed during the 1970's and 1980's, the final closure occuring in 1992 when Parkside colliery in Newton-le-Willows closed. The towns main tourist attraction is the 'World of Glass' museum, which is next to the towns Hilton hotel. The towns rugby league club are very succesful in the Super League, and in 2001 were crowned World Club Champions.
