King's Lynn is a town of 34,564 (2001) inhabitants, in the east of the UK in the county of Norfolk. The town was originally known as Bishop's Lynn, however, when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1538 it became King's Lynn. The town became prosperous in the 17th century through the export of corn; at the time it was one of the largest ports in the UK, though the town later went into decline until, only rescued by the arrival of rail transport in 1847, when King's Lynn became a London Expansion Town, and its population almost doubled. Nowadays, King's Lynn is associated mainly with fishing, glas making, and small scale engineering works. The town retains a role as an import centre. Transport links are offered via the Fen Line to London Kings Cross, Cambridge and Ely. the town is linked to Peterborough via the A47, and Cambridge via the A10.
