About Abingdon - show infohide info

Located on the River Thames, Abingdon in Oxfordshire is an old market town which makes a claim to being Britain's oldest continuously occupied town. Abingdon boasts historical and archaeological connections over 3 millennia. Abingdon's Monday market was established before 1328, and in the 13th and 14th centuries Abingdon was a flourishing agricultural centre with an extensive trade in wool, and a famous weaving and clothing manufacture. After the abbey's dissolution in 1538 the town sank into decay, and in 1555, on a representation of its pitiable condition, Mary I granted a charter establishing a mayor, two bailiffs, twelve chief burgesses, and sixteen secondary burgesses, the mayor to be clerk of the market, coroner and a Justice of the Peace. Abingdon's Abbey ruins can still be seen in the town centre today. Abingdon is best known as the home to the MG cars production (1929-1980). It also housed the Morland brewery, whose most famous ale was Old Speckled Hen, named after an MG car. Greene King bought Morland for £182M in 1999, and the base was moved. With a long history come long traditions. Abingdon holds its Annual Michaelmas Hiring Fair - and Runaway Fair a week later, its custom of Bun Throwing from the roof of the magnificent 17th Century County Hall by the Mayor and Town Councillors to the people below, its Morris Men and annual 'Mayor of Ock Street' elections.
