About Greenock - show infohide info
Greenock is a town (burgh of barony) in the district of Inverclyde in Western Scotland. Its population was recorded as being 45,467 in the 2001 census, a decrease from about 78,000 in 1966. It lies on the South bank of the River Clyde in what was the traditional county of Renfrewshire. The town has traditionally been involved with shipbuilding, and contained some of the oldest shipbuilding companies in the world. Most shipbuilders closed during the 1970's and 80's, as competition from abroad caused a decrease in demand. No shipbuilders remain in Greenock. In the 1950's, the town benefited from IBM manufacturing parts in the town, however, competition from abroad caused closure of the manufacturing side. Nowadays Greenock is involved primarily in the service sector, with several companies, including IBM and T-Mobile basing call centres in the town. Local towns include Gourock, Dunoon, Glasgow, Dumbarton, Largs and Paisley
