About Hartlepool - show infohide info
Hartlepool is a North Sea port in North East England. It is part of the traditional county of Durham, and, in 1974, formed part of the new county of Cleveland. After the abolition of Cleveland, it was placed in the ceremonial county of Durham, but is governed by a unitary authority. It had a resident population of 90,161. The town expanded rapidly with the coming of the railways, and new docks were built at the railway terminus; at one stage 42 ship-owning companies were based in Hartlepool, and thus it was a prime target for attack when war broke out in 1914. By the 1980's, unemployment was high, though regenrration did occur in the centre, with the shopping centre being refurbished and a new marina being built. Nearby towns include Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Chester-le-Street, Durham, Redcar and Whitby.
