About Ringwood - show infohide info
Ringwood is a town in the county of Hampshire, situated on the River Avon. Traditionally the town was an agricultural centre, but since its cattle market closed in 1989 it has become a dormitory town for London, Southampton and Bournemouth. According to William Camden’s Britannia (1607) the name was originally Regnewood. It was listed in the Domesday Book as Rincewed. It meant 'the wood of the Regni'. The Regni were an ancient people of Britain. The towns leisure centre was the filming location of BBC sitcom "The Brittas Empire". Ringwood is also home of the Ringwood Brewery, which produces a variety of Real Ales. Nearby towns include Poole, Bournemouth, Brockenhurst, New Milton, Wimborne Minster, Southampton and Lymington.
