About Southall - show infohide info

Southall is a suburb in the London borough of Ealing. Southall has a population of approximately 51400 inhabitants. The town expanded thanks to expansion of the Grand Junction Canal (now the Grand Union Canal), which links London to the rest of the Canal network (and was one of the last to carry regular commercial traffic). The canal allowed a number of industries to spring up, including the manufacture of bricks, flour and chemicals. In 1877, the Martin brothers set up a ceramics factory in the town, which produced the distinctive 'Martinware' ceramic products until 1923. A selection of products from the factory are on display in the Southall Library. Southall was scene of a major rail crash in 1997, which saw 6 killed when a passenger train collided with a freight train. As of 2004, Southall has a largely Asian community; over 55% of the community in Southall is of Indian or Pakistani origin. At one point, a motion was tabled tor rename Southall Punjabtown! The conflicting religions in Southall have blended seamlessly, with very little ethnic tension. Southall is home to the Broadway, home to the largest Asian shopping mall in London, famous for its ethnic shops and restaurants. Southall is also home to the Glassy Junction pub, which served a number of Indian draught beers and is the first pub in the UK to accept payments in rupees. Southall has a railway station, which sees services between London Paddington and Reading, as well as the new 'Heathrow Connect' services for employees and passengers to Heathrow Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Nearby towns to Southall include Ealing, Uxbridge, Feltham, Slough, Harrow, Wembley, Staines, Hounslow, Richmond, Wandsworth and Kingston-upon-Thames.
