Lanzarote is an island in the Canaries, with an area of 845.9km², making it the 4th largest of the seven islands, though it sees the third highest number of tourists, exceeded only by Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The island of Lanzarote enjoys a warm climate year round, 20-25ºC in winter to 30-35º in Summer, hence the islands popularity with tourists. The island is divided into 7 municipalities, Arrecife, HarÃa, San Bartolomé, Teguise, TÃas, Tinajo and Yaiza. The main resorts are Puerto del Carmen, Teguise and Matagorda. The main city of Lanzarote is Arrecife, which is where the islands airport is. The airport handles 5.5 million passengers annually, mainly from the EU countries. The island also has a number of geographical features which make it popular with tourists, notably El Golfo crater and the Timanfaya national park.
