About York - show infohide info
York is a city in the north of England, in the county of Yorkshire. The city has a population of 181,094, with 137,505 living in the York urban area. The city dates from Roman times, when it was a major city called Eboracum. It was a major military base, and was the city in which Constantine was declared Emperor by his troops. Several Roman remains have been discovered during excavations around the town. In AD 866, a Viking army captured York, and ruled the area (known as 'Jorvik') for almost a century. In medieval times, Yoek was an important trading centre, and was seat of a Royal Government as well as an Archbishop. Two castles were built in the city, either side of the River Ouse. York prospered, and this is reflected in a number of its buildings. The York Minster is the largest medieval cathedral in England, and one of the largest gothic churches in Europe. York today is a popular tourist destination, as well as being a centre of communications, education and manufacturing. The town is also a major railway junction on the East Coast Main Line. The city has always been an important railway city, with train builders and major depots being situated next to the station. Today, most of these have closed, though the former depot now forms the National Railway Museum. York sees railway services across the UK, to destinations including London, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Blackpool, Scarborough, Hull and Liverpool among many more local destinations. Services are operated by four companies - Virgin Cross Country, GNER, TransPennine Express and Northern Rail. Attractions in the town include the National Railway Museum, The Shambles, York Minster, York Dungeon, Jorvik, the Yorkshire Museum, York Castle museum and York City art gallery. Nearby towns to York include Leeds, Malton, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Garforth, Selby, Tadcaster and Wetherby.
