About Pitlochry - show infohide info
Pitlochry, estimated population 2,900, is a burgh in Perthshire, Scotland, lying on the River Tummel within the council area of Perth and Kinross. It is largely a twentieth century town, having grown as a tourist resort, in particular a centre for hillwalking. The town has two whisky distilleries (Edradour, which is billed as the smallest distillery in Scotland, and Blair Athol), a small theatre, a small brewery (Moulin Brewery), and a hydroelectric power station. The dam which provides the power is known for its 311 metre long salmon ladder; fish can be viewed leaping from weir to weir within the ladder, via an underwater viewing station or via video from inside the visitor centre. It was originally a small village called Moulin, but was later built upon as the years progressed and now the built part is called Pitlochry. Moulin is still situated in the area however, near the north of the actual town. Pitlochry is known for its great forestry and mountain walks around Ben Y Vrackie. It was the winner of the 2003 Britain in Bloom, in the category of 'Small Country Town'. The town is bypassed by the main A9 Inverness to Perth road, and has a railway station. Nearby towns include Perth, Dundee, Blairgowrie, Kirriemuir, Alyth, Aberfeldy, Dunkeld and Coupar Angus.
