About Canterbury - show infohide info
Canterbury is a borough of south-east England on the Stour River east-southeast of London. Canterbury is an historic town, famous because of Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales", an everyday tale of stories told by pilgrims on their way to Canterbury along the Pilgrims Way from Winchester. Old buildings in Canterbury are nearly on every corner along with 13th century walls and an 14th century gate. Canterbury Cathedral is the seat of the archbishop and primate of the Anglican Communion. Built on the site of an abbey founded by Saint Augustine, Canterbury was the scene of the murder of Thomas ŕ Becket in 1170. Surrounding areas include Herne Bay, Folkestone, Faversham, Ashford, Dover and Margate.
