About Sleaford - show infohide info
Sleaford is a town in the county of Lincolnshire, England. Its name is derived from the River Slea, upon which the town lies. The town Sleaford was, until recently, an agricultural town, supporting a cattle market and several agricultural seed producers. The town is now developing tourism. Markets are held on Friday, Saturday and Mondays; and a farmers market is held on the first Saturday of every month. Sleaford, like many towns, expanded when the railway arrived. At its peak, Sleaford was the junction of five branch lines, making it a major rail centre. The railways caused the closure of the Sleaford Navigation canal, in 1878. Today the railway is no longer the hub it once was, though it sees frequent services to Peterborough, Lincoln Central, Skegness and Doncaster (via Lincoln). Near to the town is RAF Cranwell, which consists of two airfields, with an office training college between the two. The northern, grassed, airfield was used by airships in WWI, the southern airfield is tarmacced, and sees regular training flights from jet and propellor training aircraft. Nearby towns include Grantham, Boston, Lincoln, Conningsby, Newark-on-Trent, Barkston, Caythorpe and Barrowby.
