About Mansfield - show infohide info
Mansfield is a town of 99,300 inhabitants, in the county of Nottinghamshire. It lies on the River Maun, from which the towns name is derived. There has been a settlement on the site since 70AD. Later, Mansfield became administrative town for the Royal Forest of Sherwood. The town used to have the record for being the largest town in the UK without rail service; the towns two stations had been closed during the Beeching era in the 1960s. This is now no longer the case, as the town was linked by the Worksop-Nottingham 'Robin Hood Line' in the 1990s. Mansfield is not a particularly affluent town, as a result of its coal mining heritage, and it is still regarded as a largely working class town. The town suffers from alcoholism, drug abuse and anti-social behaviour, and this is thought to be as a result of Mansfields legacy with the mining industry. Channel 4 names Mansfield 6th worst place to live, in an August 2005 documentary. Mansfield is linked to the M1 via the A38, and to Chesterfield via the A617; the two towns share a rivalry over their respective football teams. As well as Chesterfield, other nearby towns include Ripley, Alfreton, Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, Bolsover and Newark-on-Trent.
