Cookstown is a town of approximately 11,000 inhabitants, in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The town was founded in 1609 by a planter named Alan Cooke, and became one of the main centres of the linen industry. Today, a working mill still exists in the town, Wellbrook Beating Mill; beating is the process used to smooth and polish the linen after manufacture. Cookstown's main street is the longest and widest in Ireland, at 1¾ miles long. The busiest day is Saturday, when the traditional market is held in Oldtown Street. A few miles away from Cookstown is Ardboe Cross (ironically in Moortown, and not in fact Ardboe) is one of the best examples of a 9th/10th century High cross in Northern Ireland. 22 panels illustrate stories from the Old Testament and the New Testament of the Bible.
