About Portrush - show infohide info
Portrush (Irish: Port Rois) is a town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, beside the border with County Londonderry. Rois means headland in Irish, and this name comes from the fact that much of the town, including the railway station, many guest houses and a number of bars and restaurnats, are situated on a peninsula pointing north west. As of 2001, the town had a population of 6,372. During the off-season, Portrush is largely a dormitory town for the nearby Campus of the University of Ulster, in Coleraine. Attractions in Portrush include the famous (at least, to those from Northern Ireland!) Barry's Amusements, as well as Portrush Countryside Centre, the Dunluce Centre and a swimming complex. Also in the town is the renowned Royal Portrush Golf Club which hosted the 1951 British Open Golf championship. There are sandy beaches and rocky beaches to the east and west. The Portrush is served by rail, on a branch from Coleraine. Trains operate hourly, and connect to services from on the Londonderry to Belfast line. Some peak time trains run direct to Belfast Great Victoria Street. During the summer months, the Portrush Flyer operates. This is a special steam excursion, from Whitehead Excursion station to Portrush via Belfast. Its main passengers are families and social groups. The train runs non-stop from Belfast to Portrush, and allows its passengers to enjoy 6 hours by the sea before returning. Nearby towns to Portrush include Portstewart, Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballycastle and Limavady.
