Dover is the closest English port to France and continental Europe, being only 21 miles (34 kilometres) from the French port of Calais. It is famous for its white cliffs, which are made of chalk. Thanks to the discovery of a sunk boat, it is known that Dover has been a port since the Bronze age; and it has been in use ever since.
