About Darlington - show infohide info
Darlington is an attractive market town situated in the Tees Valley on the border between County Durham and North Yorkshire. Darlington is well known as the birthplace of the railways when the first public railway ran through the town in 1825. Darlington began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement on the River Skerne which is a northern tributary of the Tees. Darlington town was later taken by the Danes and there are still many place names of Viking origin in its vicinity. Since Norman times Darlington has been a borough and the site of an important market. Surrounding areas include Hartlepool, Whitby, Stockton-on-Tees, Guisborough and Redcar.
