Motherwell is a large burgh in North Lanarkshire, situated between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The town has a population 30,311. The town has been the steel capital of Scotland, nicknamed Steelopolis, with its skyline dominated by the water tower and three cooling towers of the Ravenscraig steel plant which closed in 1992. With the closure of the plant, the town suffered high unemployment and economic decline. The closure of plant also signalled the end of large scale steel production in Scotland, as the plant had one of the longest continuous casting (concast), hot rolling, steel production facilities in the world before it was decomissioned. Today, the town has undergone a revival thanks to a number of call centres and businesses setting up in newly created business parks such as the Strathclyde Business Park. The town is home to North Lanarkshire Council, which covers a population of 327,000 (93,000 being in Motherwell and Wishaw), as well as Strathclyde Police's 'N' division. Motherwell is well linked to the rail network, with trains serving Milngavie, Lanark, Dalmuir, Cumbernauld and Glasgow Central. Additionally, the town is called at by some Virgin West Coast services between Glasgow and London, and Virgin Cross Country services to the South Coast. GNER also serve the station with their Glasgow - London Kings Cross services. Nearby towns to Motherwell inlcude Wishaw, Larkhall, Hamilton, East Kilbride, Glasgow, Coatbridge and Airdrie.
