Telford is a town in the county of Shropshire, with a population of 138,241. It is a planned town, named after Thomas Telford, a Scottish industrialist who became Surveyor of Public Works of Shropshire The town was built during the 1960's and 1970's as a New Town in the former coal mining area of the county. The new town of Telford enveloped a number of existing towns and villages such as Dawley, Stirchley, Donnington Wood and Oakengates, and the scenic Ironbridge Gorge. A shopping centre was built at the geographical centre of the new town. Telford was originally supposed to have a population of 250,000 inhabitants before the year 2000. Despite this, it is still the largest town in Shropshire. A number of companies have based themselves in Telford, in particular the IT companies EDS, Cap Gemini & Fujitsu, who each employ significant numbers of the local population. The town is linked to the M54 motorway, which links the town to the rest of the motorway network. The town is served by rail, with three stations - Wellington, Oakengates and Telford Central. Telford Central and Wellington see services to Chester, Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Walsall and Aberystwyth. Oakengates is on the Wellington-Walsall line and is the least frequently served station. Nearby towns to Telford inlcude Stafford, Shrewsbury, Walsall, Newport, Wolverhampton, Stourbridge, Dudley and Cannock.
