Tynemouth is an historic seaside resort in the county of Tyne and Wear. The town lies between the towns on North Shields and Whitley Bay, at the mouth of the River Tyne. The town has been settled since the iron ages, as a result of its headland being easily defendable. Tynemouth was popular with the wives of Kings when they were campaigning in Scotland, the queens of Edward I and Edward II having stayed here frequently. King Edward III reckoned the castle here at Tynemouth was one of the strongest castles in the northern marches.
