About Larne - show infohide info

Larne is a town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, with a population of 31,000 people. It is primarily a seaport dealing mainly in freight. Larne was once a Viking settlement, and has been a seaport for over 1000 years. The town has a castle dating from the sixteenth century, and a replica of an Irish Round Tower, The Chaine Memorial (known affectionately as the Giant's Pencil). The port of Larne, as well as being a large freight port, sees ferries to Cairnryan and Troon in Scotland, as well as Fleetwood in Lancashire. The town is linked to Belfast via the A8 road, and the A2, which takes a more scenic route. As well as ferry and road, Larne is connected by rail to Belfast and the rest of the Northern Irish rail network by a line via Whitehead and Carrickfergus. Towns near to Larne include Ballyclare, Whitehead, Balleygalley, Shoptown, Portmuck, Glynn, Glencoe and Ballycarry.
