About Nuneaton - show infohide info
Nuneaton is the largest town in the countyof Warwickshire, with approximately 70,000 inhabitants. The towns name comes from a 12th century nunnery, parts of which still exist, around which the town grew. The town expanded mainly in the 17th century due to Nuneaton's proximity to the Warwickshire coalfields; later on the town became involved with the textile industry during the industrial revolution. In World War II the town suffered heavy damages as many munitions plants existed in the town. As a result, much of Nuneatons town centre was rebuit after the war. As with many UK towns, the textile industry has declined in recent decades, however Nuneaton retains prosperity as it is a commuter town for nearby Coventry and Birmingham. Electronics and Distribution are the towns major economic activities. The town lies on the West Coast Main Line, with services to London and Birmingham to the south, and Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh to the north. The town also lies close to the M6 motorway, giving access to Birmingham and the M1, as well as Carlisle and the M8 for Glasgow. Nearby towns include Birmngham, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Hinckley, Coventry, Atherstone, Coleshill and Bedworth.
