About Margate - show infohide info
Margate is a town of 57,000 on the island of Thanet, in Kent. The town grew as a result of Londoners escaping to the seaside. Margate had a fleet of approximately 30 pleasure boats operating. The town also had a number of Steamboats operating, and these were so popular that there were 6 different companies operating excursions on them in 1841; the steamboats lasted until 1967, despite competition from the railways and road transport. The railways arrived in Margate during 1846, as a branchline opened to Margate Sands station from Ashford. This required trains to reverse at the terminus in Ramsgate, however this was no deterrent; and the line was popular until a rival line was built to Margate West. When the operators merged to form the Southern Railway, the Margate Sands line was closed, and Margate West became the towns only station. In recent years, as with most seaside towns, Margate has seen a decline in its fortunes as a reuslt of tourists travelling abroad. Thus unemployment is high, and many of Margate's attractions are closing down, such as its theme park, which was also damaged by fire. A Turner gallery has commenced construction dspite opposition in the hope of attracting more tourists to the town. The A299 links the town of Margate to the M2 for London, the M25 and other motorways. The town is also close to Manston airport, though there are currently no scheduled passenger flights to the town. Margate is close to the towns of Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Canterbury, Whitchurch, Herne Bay and Deal.
