East Kilbride is a town of over 81,000 inhabitants (2006 estimates). It is Scotland's sixth alrgest town by population size, and the largest of the country's 'New Towns'. The town is located 9 miles to the south of Glasgow, and lies on the Rotten Calder. Evidence of habitation in the area of East Kilbride dates to ancient graves found nearby; Roman coins and sandals have also been found nearby. The name East Kilbride takes comes from an Irish Saint, St. Bride, who founded a monstery here in 6th century. 'Kil' means church, or burial place. East Kilbride rose from a village of 900, to a large burgh in 1930, before being designated Scotland's first New Town in 1947. Today it is a large town, which has applied for city status twice, losing the title of Millennium City to Inverness in 2000, and Jubilee City to Stirling in 2002. The town is occupied by a large shooping centre, comprised of several separately named departments, but known by local residents as "The Town Centre". This holds the title of largest indoor shopping centre in Scotland and 10th largest in Europe. East Kilbride lies at the end of a railway branch line, and sees twice hourly trains to and from Glasgow Central, where connections can be made to most of Scotland and the UK. The town is a popular commuter town for Glasgow thanks to its proximity and links to the city. Nearby towns to East Kilbride include Glasgow, Motherwell, Hamilton, Paisley, Irvine, Kilmarnock, Troon, Kirkintilloch and Cumbernauld.
