About Maidstone - show infohide info
Maidstone is the county town of Kent, about 30 milrs from London. It stands on the River Medway. Maidstone is reckoned to date from the Stone Age, though it attained significance with the Romans, as one of their roads passed through the site of the town, and two villas have been discovered there. Maidstone's town status was confirmed in 1549; it was later granted its royal charter in 1619. The town has historically been associated with brewing, wool and paper, though today the wool industry has vanished, and only one brewery remains. Maidstone is passed by the M40; prior to the building of the motorway it was a hub for the numerous trunk roads linking the towns. Maidstone is also linked to London via Rail; the line also links Maidstone to Dover, Folkestone and Ashford. Towns close to Maidstone include Sittingbourne, Chatham, Rochester, Gillingham, Aylesford, Sheppey, Leybourne, West Malling and Royal Tunbridge Wells.
