Longford is a town in central Ireland, and is county town of County Longford. Longford grew up around a Dominican Priory in the 1400's, the town now has a approximate population of 8,000 people. The main industries in the town are food production, steelworking, and the manufacture of medical equipment. Longford is a commercial centre, and has a number of shops and stores. The town is 122km from Dublin, and is linked to the Irish capital via the N5. The N5 also diverges here into the N4. The N5 continues to Westport, Mayo; the N4 to Sligo. Longford is also served by rail, as it lies on the Dublin-Sligo line, and sees several intercity trains between the two towns. Longford also sees regular commuter trains to Dublin, and these are very well utilised. Towns nearby include Danesfort, Lanesborough, Moydow, Ballyclare, Tarmonbarry, Whitehall, Newtown Forbes, Drumlish, Ballinalee, Curraghroe, Scramoge, Strokestown, Kilglass and Pipers Town.
