Warminster is a town in Wiltshire. The town has a population of approximately 20,000 inhabitants. It is known for a number of sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects, especially on Cley Hill to the West. Warminster was originally a market town, with a busy corn market. It was also a busy coaching stop between London, Bristol and the South West. The name Warminster is thought to mean 'The minister or monastery church by the river Ware or Were'. However, there is no trace of a church, and many residents also dispute there being a river of that name. After the demise of the corn market, the town established a number of rural and light industries, including silk throwing, paint manufacture, banana ripening, paint production, barley breeding, greetings card production, gloving, shoe making and packaging. In turn, some of these industries have also declined. Warminster is no longer a market town, and so its main function today is as a service town for the local army camps, particularly the Waminster training centre and the ABRO. Many servicemen who saw military service close to the town have since returned, purchasing houses and making their homes in the town. Warminster is largely a commuter town, and as a result has left the town relatively unspoilt. The A36 bypass has helped this. as it prevents traffic clogging up the streets in the centre of the town. The town is popualr with those who enjoy outdoor pursuits, with the countryside to the south of the town (which has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty) popular with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and also hang gliders. The town has a rail station, with services to Portsmouth, Cardiff, Westbury and Brighton. These destination take in other major towns such as Bristol, Newport, Southampton and Salisbury.
