About Downpatrick - show infohide info
Downpatrick is a town of 10,113 inhabitants, in County Down, Northern Ireland. Downpatrick is one of Irelands most historic towns. It takes it's name from the 'Dun' (fort) which once stood on the hill overlooking the town (now occupied by the towns cathedral). St Patrick was reputedly buried here in 461AD, on Cathedral Hill; his grave is still a site of annual pilgrimmages on St. Patrick's Day. Today Downpatrick is primarily a dormitory town for commuters working in Belfast, which is 33km away from the town. Downpatrick itself suffers from high unemployment due to a lack of investment in local industry. Nearby towns to Downpatrick include Ballynahinch, Crossgar, Listooder, Portaferry, Dundrum and Tyrella.
