South Shields is a town on the east coast of England, in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. South Shields lies on the south bank of the River Tyne, and has a population of about 90,000. The town is situated on the site of an excavated Roman fort. A Roman gatehouse and barracks have been reconstructed on the original foundations. In 1499, salt panning began in the town, and achieved major importance. It is recorded that up to 200 boiling-pans were located in the town. Other important industries for the town were coal mining, glass and chemical manufacture. South Shields had the worlds largest alkali works. another important industry of the town was shipbuilding. However, today the town relies largely on service industries such as shops, and South Shields has become a dormitory town for workers in nearby Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland. The town's economy also benefits from tourism through its beach, and by marketing itself as 'Catherine Cookson County', encouraging thousands of visitors annually to view the place of her birth, and to enjoy the attractions on the promenade at South Shields. South Shields sees Tyne and Wear Metro services to Newcastle and Gateshead, from where connections to London, Scotland and across the Pennines can be made. Nearby towns to South Shields include North Shields, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Gateshead, Washington, Sunderland, Jarrow, Wallsend and Whitley Bay.
