About Runcorn - show infohide info
Runcorn is an industrial town in the county of Cheshire. The town sits on the southern bank of the River Mersey, at the site of the rivers first bridge crossing. It's population is 61,330 people. Runcorns first mention in recorded history was in 915AD, when it was a fortification to protect the north from invading Vikings. However, Runcorn was not noted in the Domesday book; though several nearby villages were. The castle was rebuit as a Motte and Bailey type, to watch over the plains of Lancashire and Cheshire, and the river estuary. The remains of this castle are still visible; over the years it changed hands frequently. Runcorn today consists of 2 parts - the old town and new town. The old town is built around the Bridgwater Canal during the Industrial Revolution, the new town was built during the 1960's to house overspill from nearby Liverpool. The town has been heavily involved with chemical production since the industrial revolution, oil refining also takes place nearby. The town has two stations, Runcorn and Runcorn East. Runcorn sees regular trains between London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street with Virgin Trains, and Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street with Central Trains. Runcorn East station sees trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Llandudno, with Arriva Trains Wales. As a result of these connections, Runcorn acts as a dormitory town for commuters working in Liverpool and Manchester. Nearby towns include Liverpool, Widnes, Birkenhead, Bebington, Ellesmere Port, Warrington, Northwich and Chester.
