About Spalding - show infohide info
Spalding is a small town of 20,000 inhabitants in the county of Lincolshire. Spalding is known as 'the Jewel of the Fen', and is famed as a centre of the bulb industry. An annual tulip parade takes place in the town on the first Saturday in May; it is a major tourist attraction. The event is a procession of floats, decorated with tulips - a by product of the bulb industry. If the tulips are late, then daffodils and crepe paper will be used in place of the flowers. The town of spalding is located in the centre of prime farmland due to the rich, silty soil which comes from the drained marshland which makes up most of the arable land in the region. As a result, there are a number of garden centres and nurseries nearby, as well as a thriving agricultural industry. Numerous vegetable packing plants are located in the region. The main vegatables grown near Spalding are potatoes, peas, carrots, wheat, barley, oats, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, kale and brussel sprouts, and many more. Spalding is on branch line from the main East Coast Main Line, and sees frequent trains between Peterborough and Lincoln; some of the Lincoln services carry on to Newark North Gate station. Nearby towns include Peterborough, Lincoln, King's Lynn, Boston, Sleaford and Grantham.
