St Albans is a cathedral city in the county of Hertfordshire. It lies on the A5, and was the first main town for travellers travelling north from London on the A5. St Alban's was founded by the Roman's as Verulamium, and was Britain's second largest town after Londinium (London). It was a major town on the Roman Road from London to the North, and thus had a number of inns and coaching houses. The medieval town of St Albans grew up around St Alban's Abbey, the site upon which Britain's first Christian martyr was beheaded. The Abbey was later made a parish church, and in 1877 was made a cathedral when the city charter was granted. The growth of St Alban's in the 20th century has been fairly slow as it was primarily a rural market town, and a stopping point on the route to and from London. Its main industry came in the inter war years, when a number of electronic companies. After WWII, it became a major population centre after the redistribution of London's population. Today, the city is a popular tourist destination as it has such a range of buildings from many era's. It is also a popular location for filming, and various TV drama's have been filmed here. The town is now mainly a commuter town for London, though a number of people are empoyed in the town for tourism and service industry purposes. St Albans sees rail services to London as a part of the main Bedford to Brighton line, which travels via London Bridge. Trains between Luton and Wimbledon also travel via London Kings Cross. Additionally, St Albans is the starting point for trains to Wimbledon, and again services pass through London.
