About Wetherby - show infohide info
Wetherby is an historic market town in the county of West Yorkshire. It is part of the metropolitan borough of Leeds, and stands on the River Wharfe. Wetherby is listed in the Domesday Book as Wedrebi, which means wether or ram farm. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Knights Templar (later the Knights Hospitallers) were granted land and property in Yorkshire. The Knights Templar were granted a market charter in 1240, which allowed them to hold a market in Wetherby (then known as Werreby). The charter stated the market was to be held on Thursdays, and to this date Wetherby still holds a Thursday market. From 1318-1319, northern england suffered a number of attacks from Scots. After the Battle of Bannockburn, Wetherby was burned down with a number of inhabitants being taken away and killed. In 1644, the Parliamentarians stayed in Wetherby while joining forces with the Scots. Wetherby was situated on the Great North road, and thus was also an important coaching stop. At its peak, up to 40 inns and alehouses were situated in the town. Today, there are still several hotels, with tourists using them to visit the Yorkshire Dales and Harogate. Wetherby has a famous racecourse, which hosts about 18 races annually. The faclities at the racourse include conference and banqueting facilities. Opposite the racecourse is the Wetherby Young Offenders Institute. The town formerly had a railway station, which is now closed. It was a junction on the Harrogate to Church Fenton Line, which gave access to Leeds. The nearest station to Wetherby is now Cattal, which sees services from York to Leeds via Harrogate and Knaresborough, operated by Northern Rail. Nearby towns to Wetherby include Harrogate, Leeds, Knaresborough, York, Bradford, Halifax, Garforth, and Selby.
