About Enniskillen - show infohide info
Enniskillen is the county of town of County Fermargh, Northern Ireland, and is by far the largest town in the county with a population of 13,559. Enniskillen can trace its beginnings back to the 1600's. In 1612, King James I entrusted control of the new settlement to an English planter named William Cole who was to settle a host of craftsmen and build the town from scratch, to include a castle, barracks, church, streets, housing, a cemetery, a gaol among other public buildings. during the famine years, in 1840, a workhouse was set up in Enniskillen for those without jobs; work was done in return for food and shelter. The work was menial, and the living uncomfortable, which was to encourage those in the workhouse to find employment elsewhere. It was in the late 19th century that most of Enniskillen's notable buildings sprung up, including a number of churches and the new town hall. During WWII, eniskillen was a base for a number of Air Force personnel, as there were 3 airports in the area. Patrols for North Atlantic convoys were based here, along with American troops training for D-Day, and the Royal Candian Air Force and other British Empire troops. With the troubles in the late 20th century came a bloody time in the history of Enniskillen, with murders by bomb and bullet up until the infamous cenotaph bomb in 1987, which caused a lull for a number of years, though despite an IRA ceasefire there have been several bombs since. Modern Enniskillen is a bustling town, and a commercial centre for County Fermargh. There are a number of shops and services in the town for the greater Enniskillen region, and the villages further afield. In addition, there are entertainment facilities such as a theatre, cinema, leisure centre and sports stadia. Enniskillen sees hourly services from the buscentre to Belfast's Europa Buscentre, and services to a number of other towns and villages in the region. Enniskillen also has an airport, though it sees no scheduled flights. It is, however, popular for light aircraft and leisure flights. Nearby towns include Tempo, Creagh, Monea, Blaney, Derrygonnelley, Garvary and Boho.
