About Ayr - show infohide info
Ayr lies in Ayrshire county, and is the largest holiday town on the Clyde coast. Ayr is situated on the Firth of Clyde, looking out on the glorious panorama of the Firth, with the majestic peaks of Arran in the foreground and the Mull of Kintyre in the background. Ayr has a street plan that dates back to the 13th century, and a bridge over 800 years old, and was originally known as St John's Ayr or Inverayr. By the 15th century, it was Scotland's main west coast port until Glasgow took over. Ayr was a major distribution centre for tobacco, slate, salt, and earthenware. Ayr's castle was demolished by Oliver Cromwell to make room for a governing citadel, whose walls still remain. On April 26, 1315, the first Parliament of Scotland was held in Ayr by Robert the Bruce. Ayr's contributions to the world of sport include holding the Scottish Grand National and Ayr Gold Cup in horseracing, as well as the local team Ayr United F.C. reaching the final of the 2001-2002 Scottish League Cup competition.
