About Livingston - show infohide info
Livingston is a town in the West Lothian region of Scotland, 30 miles from Glasgow and 10 from Edinburgh. Livingston is the largest town in West Lothian, with a resident population of approximately 41,000, making it one of the top 20 cities in Scotland. Livingston was built as part of the New Towns Act 1946, partly to ease overcrowding in Glasgow. A development corporation was set up in order to manage and promote the development. The corporation managed to attract a number of technology related companies to Livingston, and BSkyB located a call centre there. The development agency ended in 1990, and control of Livingston reverted to the West Lothian council. Now the main employment in Livingston comes from the NHS and the retail sector. The council has continued development in the town, building a new shopping centre and college campus. Towns in the vicinity of Livingston include Edinburgh, Queensferry, Broxburn, Bathgate, Whitburn, Bo'ness, Linlithgow, West Calder, Polbeth and Winchburgh.
