A major port, it was the embarkation point for the fleet that fought the Spanish Armada in 1588 and for Drake, Raleigh, and several other early explorers. Surrounding areas include Crownhill, Devonport, Devonport Dockyard, Eggbuckland, Estover, Hamoaze, Laira, Leigham, Lipson, Millbridge, Morice Town, Mutley Plain, Plymouth Hoe, Plympton, Plymstock, St Budeaux, Saltram House, Stoke, Stonehouse and Swilly.
