About Portadown - show infohide info
Portadown is a town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It has a population of just over 33,000. Portadown is situated on the River Bann, in the north of the county. The town can trace its origins to the 17th Century, though it was only in the Victorian era that the town expanded, when the railways came to Portadown. Portadown has good transport links, with rail to Belfast and Newry; road to belfast via the M12 and M1, and Belfast Aldergrove airport being just 20 miles away. The town is known as the "Hub of the North" as a result of this, and, unlike many towns, has retained a large number of manufacturing industries producing pharmaceuticals, meat products, baked goods and carpets which are sold nationally and internationally. Portadown also has the dubious honour of being listed 20th in 'Crap Towns II: the worst places to live in the United Kingdom'. Towns close to Portadown include Lurgan, Craigavan, Dungannon, Armagh, Gilford, Tandragee and Moira.
