Machynlleth is a town of approximately 2,000 people, located in the traditional county of Montgomeryshire, Powys, in western Wales. Machynlleth is situated in the Dyfi Valley. The town claims to be the ancient seat of parliament in Wales, as it was the seat of Owain Glyndwr's Welsh Parliament in 1404. Since the 1970's it has attracted a number of English bohemians, and has become known as the alternative capital of Wales. The Centre for Alternative Technology is based in Machynlleth, and the town is site of a rapidly expanding renewable energy industry. Machynlleth has a railway station with services to Birmingham, Pwllheli and Aberystwyth. The town is also situated at the intersection of the A489 and A487, which leads to Aberystwyth. Towns nearby include Barmouth, Newtown, Tywyn, Aberdyfi and Aberystwyth.
