About Redruth - show infohide info
Redruth is a town in Cornwall. It has a population of 12,323 inhabitants. The town gained prosperity with demand for copper ore rocketing in the eighteenth century, as copper was required to make brass - an essential metal in the industrial revolution. Due to demand being high, and Redruth having large deposits of copper ore, the town rapidly became a hugely prosperous mining area, and its population grew rapidly. Despite the towns prosperity, most miners families remained poor. The mining industry declined at the end of the 19th century, across the UK, including in Redruth. Many miners emigrated to America, Australia and South Africa, where the mining industry was prosperous. Today, Redruth is a small commercial town. The towns station sees links to Penzance, London, Paignton and Bristol. Nearby towns include Newquay, St Ives, Camborne, Truro, Penzance, Falmouth, St Austell and Helston.
