About Stafford - show infohide info

Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire, England. The towns population as of 2001 was 60,049, with a population of 120,000 in the greater borough area. The name Stafford means "Ford by a landing place". This is because Stafford was once the only practical crossing point for the River Trent, as no other point could feasibly have an army cross; thus Stafford was an important strategic location in the region. Stafford Castle was built nearby in 1070, first built form wood, and later from stone. Today the castle remains, and is lit at night so that it can be seen from the M6 and West Coast Main Line. Stafford's industry comprises mainly of heavy electrical engineering, with a large factory producing power station transformers. The town is also home to a prison, HMP Stafford, which provides employment for a number of people. Stafford is also home to the IT and Computing campus of the Staffordshire university. Stafford lies on the West Coast Main Line, and sees services to London Euston, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as local services to Birmingham via the Chase Line. Nearby towns include Newpoert, Cannock, Stoke-on-Trent, Crewe, Rugeley, Tamworth and Stone.
