Ullapool is a town in the Scottish county of Cromartyshire, in the western Highlands. Despite its small size, of just 1,308 inhabitants, it is the largest settlement for about 60 miles! The town was founded in 1788 as a herring port, designed by Thomas Telford. It is situated on the east shore of Loch Broom. Today, the harbour is still central to the town, used for fishing, yachting and a ferry port with ferries to Stornoway on the Outer Hebrides. The town also boasts a small museum, arts centre, a swimming pool and pubs. The town is also a centre for walkers, and other holidaymakers in the area. Ullapool also has a radio station of it's own - Loch Broom FM, on 102.2. There is plenty of natural beauty in the region, with stunning sunsets over the Loch, and the natural Highland scenery. Ullapool can also boast a golf course. The town acts mainly as a fishing port, and a service centre for the numerous villages and hamlets in the region. Ullapool is connected to Dingwall and Inverness via the A835. There are anumber of small villages and hamlets close to Ullapool, including Ardmair, Rhue, Braes of Ullapool, Inverbroom, Leckmelm, Ardcharnich, Loggie, Letters and Ardindrean.
