About Morpeth - show infohide info
Morpeth is a small market town in the county of Northumberland, in the North east of the UK. It is administrative town of the county of Northumberland, despite its small population - just 13,833. The town prospered in the 12th century, when its charter was granted by King John, and today the town has a thriving centre. It is a commuter town for the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. As a result, the town benefits from excellent transport links, from both road (The A1 bypasses the town) and rail; the town lying on the East Coast Main Line, which links London with Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The town is somewhat sarcastically known as the entertainment capital of Northumberland, as Morpeth boasts two clubs in its town centre. The town is also trying to encourage tourism, and contains a bagpipe museum, and a psychic garden. The town also boasts a leisure centre and speciality shopping. Nearby towns include Ashington, Blyth, Cramlington, Bedlington, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Whitley Bay and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
