About Rochdale - show infohide info
Rochdale is a town in north-west England, in the county of Greater Manchester, with a population of 94,000 people. It's name comes from its location on the River Roch. Rochdale grew as it was a location for east-west trade between Manchester and Yorkshire, a fact that spurred on the development of rail through the town. The Summit Rail Tunnel was built by George Stephenson, and allowed rail to connect Leeds and Manchester. A station was built one mile from the town centre. Today the station is still in use, and sees frequent services between Manchester and Leeds, and also acts as a terminus for trains to Southport, Kirkby and Manchester via Walkden or Oldham. The town is known as birthplace of the Co-operative movement, and a Co-operative supermarket still exists in the town, along with a museum of the movement. Rochdale's town hall is notable for its Victorian architecture, including stone gargoyles, golden lions and a stained glass window which was rumoured to be one of Hitlers planned aquisitions should he have won the war. Nearby towns include Manchester, Bury, Bolton, Oldham, Salford, Ashton-under-Lyme, Heywood, Radcliffe, Whitworth and Chadderton.
