About Bideford - show infohide info
Bideford is a small port town on the northern coast of Devon in the southwest of England. Bideford’s real story begins in the 16th century when it was Britain's third largest port. Legend tells that Sir Walter Raleigh landed his first shipment of tobacco there. Today, the quay still bustles with fishing vessels, cargo and pleasure boats. The town’s most famous feature is the mediaeval Long Bridge. It spans the River Torridge and boasts 24 arches of differing sizes. Bideford’s bridge was first built around 1280 as a pack horse bridge. Its original wooden structure has long since been replaced by its current stone structure and made wider to varying traffic. The original wooden bridge replaced a ford and it is generally believed that this ford was the source of the town's name (by the ford). The Long Bridge now links the main part of the town to East-the-Water. Ferry services run from Bideford Quay to the island of Lundy. Bideford is now often seen as a resort with its location to the River Torridge and with its port. It is still also highly active as a thriving market town and fishing industry. The most celebrated event to take place in Bideford includes the annual New Year's Eve celebrations. Thousands of people from neighbouring towns and villages flock to Bideford for the fireworks and festivities.
