Londonderry is a city in Northern Ireland. It is the second city of the country, after Belfast. Londonderry lies on the River Foyle, a short distance from the border with the Republic of Ireland. While the towns official name is Londonderry, it is often referred to as Derry, particularly by Nationalists. the Republic of Ireland still refers to the town and county as Derry. Derry is one of the longest continually-inhabited locations in Ireland. The first recorded reference to Londonderry was in the 6th century AD, when a monastery was formed here by St Columba, though it is thought people had been living in the vicinity for thousands of years prior to that. Colonists, organised by the London Livery companies through The Honorable Irish Society arrived in the 1600's as part of the plantation of Ulster. The walled city of Londonderry was built across the River Foyle frmo the earlier town. The city was the first planned city in Ireland, with the walls completed in 1618. The grid pattern of the streets were subsequently compied by many new towns in colonised British North America. The walls held up well during the seige of Derry, which was never breached. As a result, Londonderry is often known as the Maiden City. Today, Londonderry is a major economic asset for Northern Ireland, with a number of multinational companies having set up in the city. DuPont is the largest, and recently underwent a £40 million refurbishment to expand its global kevlar production. Other major employers include Seagate, Raytheon, NTL and Invision Software. Londonderry has a port cpable of handling vessels up to 30,000 tons. Multinationals have set up in Londonderry thanks to low labour costs, excellent communications, and no tarriffs for export into Europe. Londonderry has reasonable links with Belfast, via the A6 road, and a rail service which operates to Belfast, with 9 services to and from the Capital. An half-hourly bus service between the capital and Londonderry also operates. Londonderrry also has an airport at nearby Eglinton.
