Melton Mowbray is a town of approximately 40,000 people, in the county of Leicestershire. The town is 15 miles from Leicester, and 105 miles north of London. The town is well known, primarily for its food. In particulalr, Melton Mowbray pork pies, containing sage flecked pork and jelly in a golden pastry crust; and Stilton cheese, which originated in the village of Stilton, a short distance from Melton Mowbray. The town is also home to Melton Cloth, a thick, woolen, heavily milled nap cloth used in sailors' peacoats and donkey jackets, as well as loggers 'cruising jackets' and Mackinaws. Melton Mowbray is also said to be home of the phrase 'painting the town red', said to come from when the Marquess of Waterford and his hunting companions liberally applied red paint to buildings in the main street after a succesful hunt. The town has been a market town for over 1000 years, and was the only market town in Leicestershire at the time of the Domesday book. Melton Mowbray is served by rail, and lies on the Midland Main Line with services to Nottingham. Nearby towns to Melton Mowbray include Syston, Leicester, Nottingham, Loughborough, Beeston, Oakham and Grantham.
