About Rothesay - show infohide info
Rothesay is the principle town of the Isle of Bute, in the county of Argyll and Bute. The town features a medieval castle overlooking the town. The castle is surrounded by a moat. The town was traditionally a weekend and holiday retreat for Glaswegians, and Rothesay's wooden pier was once much busier than it is today. Today it sees ferries to Wemyss Bay several times daily, though the town also has a large marina. In its heyday the town also had an electric tramway, though this closed in the 1930's. Today the town is still a popular tourist destination, though it isn't as popular as it once was. Other settlements on the Isle of Bute include Rhubodach, Ascog and Stread. Other towns, including Dunoon, Largs, Wemyss Bay, Gourock and Millport are accessible via ferry and road.
